Surface Finishes for CNC Machining
With a wide selection of surface finishes, DS Machinery can help improve the surface qualities of your products. Surface finishes applied to your CNC-turned parts aim at improving their appearance, surface hardness, roughness, chemical and corrosion resistance, etc. They also help hide any visible tool marks from areas cut with live tooling. Here are some of your top choices.--Anodizing: a surface treatment process that uses electrochemistry to form a layer of Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) film on the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloy. Through anodic oxidation, the surface state and performance of the material can be changed, thus improving corrosion resistance, enhancing wear resistance and hardness, and protecting the metal surface.
Non-ferrous metals or their alloys (such as aluminum, magnesium, and their alloys) can be anodized. This method is widely used in mechanical parts, aircraft and automobile parts, precision instruments and radio equipment, daily necessities, and architectural decoration.Suitable material: AluminumColor: clear, black, gray, red, blue, gold, etc.Texture: Smooth, matte finish.--Bead Blasting: The sandblasting process uses compressed air to produce a high-speed jet of abrasive material. This material is directed onto the surface of the workpiece. Due to the impact and cutting effect of the abrasive material on the surface of the workpiece, the properties of the workpiece surface — such as its roughness and uniformity — are altered and improved. Results in parts with a smooth surface with a matte texture. Used mainly for visual applications and can be followed by other surface treatments.Suitable material: ABS, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, SteelColor: N/ATexture: matte finish.
--Powder Coating: a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.
Used to create a hard finish tougher than normal paint. Powder coating is mainly used to coat metal parts, such as those used in household appliances.
Suitable material: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: Black, any RAL code or Pantone number
Texture: Gloss or semi-gloss
--Electroplating: can be functional, decorative or corrosion-related. A surface treatment process that uses electrochemistry to form a layer of Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) film on the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloy. Through anodic oxidation, the surface state and performance of the material can be changed, thus improving corrosion resistance, enhancing wear resistance and hardness, and protecting the metal surface.
Non-ferrous metals or their alloys (such as aluminum, magnesium and their alloys) can be anodized.
This method is widely used in mechanical parts, aircraft and automobile parts, precision instruments and radio equipment, daily necessities and architectural decoration.
Suitable material: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: Smooth, glossy finish
--Polishing: is the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference. The process produces a surface with significant specular reflection, but in some materials is able to reduce diffuse reflection. Polishing can improve the appearance of new or used metal parts, including components in cars and other vehicles, handrails, cookware, kitchenware, and architectural metal. Pipes may also require buffing, a kind of polishing, to prevent corrosion and buildup of bacteria or mold. Buffing is also used to manufacture light reflectors.
Suitable material: Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: glossy finish
--Brushing: a surface treatment process in which abrasive belts are used to draw traces on the surface of a material, usually for aesthetic purposes. The thickness of the abrasive belts (usually between \#80-120) affects the finish. Although suitable for a handful of metals, brushing is most commonly applied to aluminum.
Suitable material: ABS, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: satin finish
